Seattle’s Challenges
A structured view of the issues shaping Seattle today and what will be examined in depth in the next phase of the project.
Seattle faces a set of visible and complex challenges that affect daily life across the city. These issues are often discussed individually, but many are connected through shared systems, constraints, and tradeoffs that are not always clearly understood.
This page outlines the major areas shaping the city today. It is not intended to provide answers, but to define the landscape.
Each of these challenges will be explored in depth in Season 2, with a focus on understanding why they persist, where systems break down, and what is getting in the way of progress.
Phase 2 of Help Seattle Project:
Understanding Seattle’s Challenges
A high-level view of the issues shaping the city and the focus of upcoming deep analysis.
Season 2 coming Summer 2026!
Public Safety and Order
Understanding safety, enforcement, and visible disorder in Seattle.
Residents report concerns about crime, open drug use, visible disorder, and emergency response times. Public safety intersects with policing, prosecution, behavioral health systems, and city policy.
Conditions vary across neighborhoods, and the relationships between these systems are not always clear.

Future of Work and AI
Technology, labor shifts, and long term economic adaptation.
Automation, artificial intelligence, and remote work are reshaping economic patterns in Seattle.
These shifts influence housing demand, tax revenue, and workforce development in ways that are still unfolding.
Housing and Cost of Living
Affordability, supply constraints, and economic pressure.
Seattle’s housing market affects renters, homeowners, and small businesses alike. Zoning, development timelines, interest rates, and income growth all influence affordability.
These forces interact in ways that create ongoing tension across the city.

The systems behind these experiences are interconnected, and not always aligned.
Small Businesses and Local Economy
Economic resilience, regulation, and neighborhood vitality.
Small businesses operate within a network of permitting systems, tax structures, labor markets, and public safety conditions.
